AUSTRIA: MOTOROLA'S GROWTH TARGETS

Article Abstract:

Motorola aims to double its share of the Austrian mobile phone market to 20% in year 2000 by selling about 600,000 handsets. About half of the phones are likely to be WAP phones. In 1999 Motorola trebled the sales of mobile phones in Austria to 240,000 units. Turnover grew 58.4% to Sch 1.476bn. Mobile phones account for almost 50% of sales, while the rest is generated with network infrastructure and corporate radio systems. Motorola is betting on the trend towards second mobile phones. In this segment, buyers increasingly pay attention to the functionality of the device rather than price. In 1999 Nokia raised its share of the Austrian mobile phone market to 30%. Siemens held 13% and Ericsson 10%.

AUSTRIA: COSMOS-KOCK TO OFFER CHEAP MOBILE PHONES

Article Abstract:

Austrian consumer electronics chain Cosmos-Kock has announced that it will offer mobile phones almost for free again from the autumn 2001. It remains unclear, however, where those cheap mobiles might come from. All four mobile communication providers in Austria (Mobilkom, Max.mobil, One, Tele.ring) emphasised that they no longer subsidised mobiles sold with pre-paid cards and were in the process of reducing subsidies for mobiles sold in combination with longer-term contracts. Only Tele.ring would not rule out that its new owner Western Wireless would run short-term campaigns with cheap mobiles maybe for the Christmas season, but definitely not in the autumn.
