DENMARK/NORDIC: MCI WORLDCOM TO TARGET MARKET

Article Abstract:

MCI Worldcom, the American telecom group, is planning to target the Nordic mobile phone market. In Denmark, the company is considering whether to co-operate with a partner or to become a service provider, thus hiring networking capacity from an existing operator. The future strategy may include bidding for a license for the UMTS system, which will be subject to a tender procedure in 2001 at the latest. MD Jonas Risberg of MCI Worldcom's Nordic subsidiary says the company is not interested in competing on the private consumer market in Denmark, but mainly to target minor and medium-size businesses. However, he says MCI Worldcom might be interested in acquiring the existing mobile phone operator Sonofon, if the price is considered right.

DENMARK: NEW MOBILE TELEPHONY CANDIDATES

Article Abstract:

Swedish mobile telephony company Tele1 Europe and Norwegian Sense are to enter the Danish mobile telephony market provided that the Danish telecoms laws are amended so as to make it possible for the companies to operate on the Danish market. The new telecoms bill in Denmark aims to make it possible for mobile telephony companies to operate in the same manner as with fixed-network telephony i.e. to lease network capacity on the dominating telecoms companies' networks. The new laws are expected to take effect as from July 1st.

TAIWAN: EAC SELLS OFF OPERATIONS

Article Abstract:

The Danish trading company Det Ostasiatiske Kompagni (OK/EAC) has sold off two divisions in Taiwan, Marketing Services and Merchandising, to the local company Tait. The Marketing Services division sells video films, cash cards for mobile phones etc., whereas the Merchandise division distributes international consumer goods. The divisions have employed 120 persons, but under Tait only 40 employees will run the operations.
