AUSTRIA: NESTLE GIVES UP BRANDS TO MANNER

Article Abstract:

The Austrian waffles producer Josef Manner AG is taking over the brands, production and the 98 staff of Victor Schmidt & Sohne from Nestle on 1 January 2000. The Swiss food group, which acquired the Tulln-based chocolates manufacturer (Ildefonso, Heller and Austria Mozartkugel brands) in 1995, is to concentrate on international brands. Manner is to close the factory in Tulln by the end of year 2000 and relocate production to Vienna, Wolkersdorf and Perg. Manner will also make investments of up to Sch 50mn in Ildefonso. The exports of the brand are to be boosted. This follows the collapse of Ildefonso sales to Russia. Altogether Manner aims to raise its export share from 44% to 50% in the next two years. In 1998 Victor Schmidt & Sohne generated a turnover of Sch 110mn. The acquisition raises Manner's share of the Austrian market from 8.5% to more than 10%. Josef Manner AG, which spent Sch 200mn on relocating production to a new plant in Wolkersdorf, expects to reach break-even in 1999, following a profit of Sch 10.58mn in 1998.

AUSTRIA/HUNGARY: MANNER SEEKING GROWTH

Article Abstract:

Manner expects a 10% increase in turnover to EUR 95mn in 1999 and to EUR 100mn in year 2000. The company that generates one-third of its turnover abroad, has started exports to Greece. For that market, the colour of the packaging had to be changed to match consumer preferences. In Hungary, Manner is considering the alternatives of setting up a production plant of its own, a cooperation arrangement or a merger in order to avoid high import duties. In January 2000 Manner is to introduce Manner-Schnitte mini-waffles in 100-gram packets, observing the trend to smaller product sizes.
