AUSTRIA: EVN BETTING ON WATER

Article Abstract:

EVN is to exploit growth potential in the water sector by taking over Nosiwag, the drinking water company of the state of Lower Austria. The acquisition costs the company Sch 1.2bn, of which about Sch 400mn goes to the Lower Austrian government. Nosiwag supplies water to about 460,000 people in Lower Austria. The annual volume of water delivered is 22mn cu.m. Under the name EVN Wasser, the company will expand into other areas of water economy such as sewage treatment. EVN is already involved in water supply and sewerage in six municipalities near Budapest in Hungary. By expanding into areas outside the energy sector, EVN is hoping to strengthen its position when the energy markets are being deregulated. It is hoping to gain synergies and cut costs by entering the water business. Another field of diversification is waste incineration. EVN chief Rudolf Gruber has announced the construction start of a waste incineration plant in Durnrohr for summer 2001.
