AUSTRIA: OBB TO CUT BACK ON LOCAL SERVICES

Article Abstract:

The chief of Osterreichische Bundesbahnen (OBB) Helmut Draxler says that the Austrian national railway company is reviewing the profitability of 30 to 35 secondary railway lines. Mr Draxler expects that service will be discontinued on at least 80% of these lines, 24 of which are used for cargo traffic and 15 for passenger traffic. OBB is reviewing its entire C-network, which comprises almost 1,600 km of OBB's overall railway network of 5,672 km. These lines account for 7% of the company's infrastructure costs of Sch 16.57bn but less than 2% of its cargo and passenger transport. Thus the C-network causes costs of more than Sch 2bn per year. Meanwhile, the so-called A-network and the express line network account for 77% of infrastructure costs and 90% of passenger and cargo transport. In the 2001-2004 period OBB aims to generate savings of a total of Sch 8bn in the C-network.

The Oesterreichische Bundesbahnen (OBB), which is responsible for passenger and goods trains throughout Austria, unveiled its new modernised ticket machines at Vienna Suedbahnhof. According to the director of the OBB, Ferdinand Schmidt, the new machines will be more user-friendly and will replace the present ticket machines which have been in place since 1981. Long distance trains, particularly on the north-south and east-west lines, are to be modernised. A top priority of the company is to improve the facilities for business travellers to work on the train. In addition to the OBB's agreements with the German and Swiss train companies, the company also plans more cooperation with train companies in Italy, Hungary and Slovenia.

AUSTRIA: OBB TO CUT LOCAL TRAIN SERVICES

Article Abstract:

In an interview with the Format magazine, the chief of OBB Helmut Draxler says that the Austrian national railway company is to cut services in the so-called C-network. This network comprises 1,700 km of local lines, which corresponds to 30% of the country's entire railway network. Train services on a number of local lines will be replaced with buses, or service frequencies will be reduced. OBB wants to pass on several local lines to the regional governments or private operators. Austria's new government urges OBB to cut costs by Sch 9.1bn in the next three years. The costs of the C-network amount to Sch 1.5bn annually.
