FRANCE: MOBILE OPERATORS TARGET CHILDREN

Article Abstract:

With the explosion of the mobile phone sector in France, and the consequent disappearance of pagers, the three mobile operators in France are targeting the younger generation, aged between 7 and 14 years old. Launched since the summer in 1999, the packs on offer include the Savvy kit from France Telecom, SFR's KD offer, and options from Bouygues Telecom. Savvy and KD options offer coloured telephones, limited use and simple tariffs, with France Telecom even offering its prepaid card with no line rental or bills. France Telecom says that the 8-25 age group represents 30% of its Mobicarte clients. According to ART, 15% of mobile phone users are aged between 15 and 19. However, operators are aiming to adapt their tariffs to target the new market of younger clients. France Telecom recently launched a new phone for children, equipped with two interactive games called Grazy Pet and Push, for its Itineris Mobicarte option.
