AUSTRIA: OPERATOR SOUGHT FOR ROAD PRICING SYSTEM

Article Abstract:

Asfinag is looking for bidders for the operation of Austria's future road-pricing system for lorries, which was originally to be introduced in mid-2002. Tenders are to be invited in July 2001, and the best bid is to be chosen at the end of the year. The operator will be free to choose the technology of the system. He will finance the installation and operate the system towards a fixed payment rather than percentage fee. Austrian electronics company Kapsch, which was one of the two bidders in an earlier tender , will not bid this time, because it sees itself as a system supplier rather than operator. The company estimate that it will take about 18 months to make the system operational.

AUSTRIA: GOVERNMENT REVIEWS ROAD PRICING PLANS

Article Abstract:

The Austrian government has extended by another three months the closing date for bids for a road pricing system for trucks, which is to be introduced on 1 July 2002. By extending the closing date from originally 14 August 2000, the government allows time to consider the option of a fully-electronic system. Also the charging of road usage fees by WAP is being considered. A dual system (electronic and manual) had been favoured until now.
