AUSTRIA: OUTLOOK FOR SPORTS EQUIPMENT TRADE

Article Abstract:

In a poll by SRE Business Research among 4,000 sports equipment retailers in Europe, 17.7% of those interviewed said they consider skiing as a sport with future. 11.8% said the same about so-called fun sports, 11.7% about football, 11% outdoor sports , 10% fitness, 9% snowboarding, 8.9% golf and 8.3% running sports. In Austria, demand was keen last year for mini-scooters, running shoes and clothing (with turnover growing by about 25%) and fitness equipment and clothing (up about 33%). The Wirtschaftskammer reports that altogether the Austrian sports equipment retail trade saw a 10% increase in turnover to Sch 15.5bn. At the same time, the European market grew by 4% to Sch 476bn. A survey by Fessel-GfK suggests that 580,000 to 600,000 pairs of skis will be sold in the 2000/2001 season. In October the industry had forecast sales of 650,000 to 700,000 pairs.

Austria: Investment records in Austrian skiing areas

Article Abstract:

In Austria investments in skiing areas reached record heights in 2001. After five years of low investment levels funds are flowing into new projects, especially in Tirol (Sch 2.5bn) and Salzburg (Sch 1bn). Environmentalist, who had severely criticised the skiing lobby in the past, now tend to be quiet. This might be because largely the projects include lift modernisation as well as the construction of snow machines, rather than developments of new skiing areas. Snow machines are in fact considered beneficial by environmentalists, as the necessary water basins provide habitats for animals and plants. Among the projects are also connections between different skiing areas.

Austria: Ski team insurance premiums high

Article Abstract:

All of the skiers on the Austrian ski team are insured for a basic premium of Sch 6,000 to Sch 10,000 per year, which provides cover of up to Sch 600,000 in case of injury or death. Without this basic insurance they are not allowed onto the team. Top skiing stars are pay premiums of up to Sch 1mn per year, which will insure them against prize money losses, as well as injury. Insurance companies tend to pay more for top skiing stars than they receive in premiums, but consider that insuring stars is good advertising. Large skiing competitions are a growth market for insurers, with the world championships being insured for Sch 300mn.
