AUSTRIA: SENIOR CITIZENS AS WEB SURFERS

Article Abstract:

Netway claims to be the first company in Austria to have launched a portal for senior citizens. The site www.netway-aktiv.at features simple navigation and large text. Netway says that the advertising space on the page is selling well. So far about 700 people aged 50-87 have participated in Netway's computer and internet courses. Eurag, a working group promoting the quality of living of elderly people in Europe, has set up internet cafes for senior citizens in Vienna and three other cities in Austria. They are to be opened in all of the country's regional capitals by the end of year 2000. It is estimated that 11% of the 2.6mn internet users in Austria are over 50 years of age.

AUSTRIA: STYRIA BOOSTS E-BUSINESS

Article Abstract:

A new e-business research centre has been set up in Graz to promote internet-based business by small and medium-sized companies. The Austrian and Styrian governments are contributing Sch 60mn and companies (among them Styria Medien AG) Sch 40mn to the 4-year Evolaris project, in which also the university will be participating.

AUSTRIA: TIROLNET BOUGHT BY TELEKOM AUSTRIA

Article Abstract:

Subject to anti-trust approvals, Telekom Austria is to take over Tirolnet marketing company from Moser Holding, the publisher of the daily paper Tiroler Tageszeitung. Tiroler Tageszeitung will, however, continue to own the internet service Tirol Online (www.tirol.com), while Telekom Austria will provide the technical infrastructure.
