AUSTRIA: STREAMLINING AT LION.CC

Article Abstract:

Lion.cc, subsidiary of the Austrian bookshop chain Libro, aims to reach black figures in the financial year to the end of February 2003. According to preliminary figures, the loss in the financial year 2000/01 amounted to just under Sch 400mn. In 2001 Lion.cc, in which German media group WAZ holds a 35% stake, is to double e-commerce turnover to Sch 300mn. Expansion in eastern Europe is no longer a high priority for Lion.cc, whereas in Germany the company still aims to become one of the five leading internet portals. In the field of content, Lion.cc will concentrate on music, books and film. The company might introduce fees for services such as SMS, MP3 music and express delivery of books. In order to boost profitability, Lion.cc is to reduce the number of staff by one-third from 100 at present. Marketing expenditures are to be cut. The internet service provider arm was sold.
