AUSTRIA: TOURISTS' PREFERENCES IN 2001

Article Abstract:

According to a poll conducted by the market research institute Fessel-GfK, 62% of Austrians over 15 years of age are planning at least one major holiday trip for 2001. A year ago the rate was 59%. 34% of those interviewed (30% a year ago) have not decided on the destination. 33% (30%) are to make holiday in Austria. Mediterranean countries have gained popularity among holiday destinations, while other European countries have lost ground. Among different holiday types, winter holidays in ski resorts and touring holidays are becoming more popular, while city holidays and recreational holidays are losing ground. Austria: Short-time work in tourism not catching on

Article Abstract:

As a measure to avoid dismissals in the Austrian tourism business after the 11 September 2001 events, a model for short-time work, supported by the labour market service, was introduced. Effected are 300 to 500 employees with only around fifteen tourism businesses taking on the model, the demand for short-time work is lower than expected. Rudolf Kaske, president of the hotel trade union, speculates that the strict criteria for claiming short-time work is one of the reasons for the low demand. Besides, the Vienna hotel industry notes no decline in its business since 11 September, making usual use of 50% to 80% of its capacities.
