AUSTRIA: TRENDS TOWARDS READY-MADE IN BAKERIES

Article Abstract:

Machine-made rolls are said to account for 62% of the turnover of Austrian bakeries, while another 35% is generated with other small-piece bakery products. The Wirtschaftsforderungsinstitut, however, reports that the share of pre-formed dough pieces has risen to 8% and continues a steep growth. Beside offering a wide range of products, bakers and retailers can thus cut costs. Since 1990 the number of bakers in Austria has fallen from more than 2,700 to about 2,300. At the same time, no less than 1,000 baking shops that bake pre-formed doughs have been opened in supermarkets, filling stations etc. Some of the pre-formed dough pieces are imported from eastern Germany and the Netherlands. In the past ten years Austria's per capita consumption of bakery products has risen from 60 kg to 70 kg, compared with 84 kg in Germany. The consumption of pre-formed dough pieces in Austria is about 15 kg per head.

Denmark: Bakeries suffering from recession

Article Abstract:

An analysis conducted by Kobmandsstandsens Oplysningsbureau of the financial situation of Danish bakeries shows that the situation is gloomy; every fifth of the bakeries is on the verge of a bankruptcy. In the retail trade the every tenth company is insolvent. The situation has exacerbated from 2000, and the number of bankruptcies in the business totalled 12 in 2000 whereas the number of bankruptcies so far this year stands at 17. Bakeries have been burdened by poor profits for so many years that they find it difficult to come to grips with the problems.

DENMARK: ANNUAL RESULTS FOR SCHULSTAD

Article Abstract:

Schulstad, the Danish bread producer, shows a pre-tax profit of DKr56.9mn (US$5.7mn) in 2000, which is nearly a 50% drop on 1999. Turnover climbed to DKr1,957mn in 2000 from DKr1,620mn in 1999. According to managing director Karsten Egelund, the company has not been fully successful with its turn-around process in Sweden and the Swedish operations reported a loss of DKr49.6mn in 2000. Competition in the Swedish bakery market is expected to tighten further following Finnish Fazer's entry into the market.
