A&DG submits Ashford plans

Article Abstract:

The Architecture and Design Group plans for Ashford International Station, Kent, England, are based on airport design. The scheme includes the international railway station building, a new station for the regional rail service and the provision of 2,000 car parking spaces. The international terminal is on two levels with passenger flows designed as in airports. The construction will be of steel, glass and polished concrete. Glass will be used to humanise the building and provide high visibility and security. The regional station will be separate but linked to the international terminal.

EC report on building professionals highlights technology-led changes

Article Abstract:

A European Community report on the future of the building professions is based on evidence from 75 practitioners. It predicts that computer aided design technology combined with the development of more standardised products and modular, pre-fabricated components will lead to a reduction in the number of architects and engineers involved in detailed design work. The report forsees an increase in the number and type of 'turnkey' building procurement methods and that professionals will often be employed by contractors or manufacturers.
