Abbey anniversary

Article Abstract:

English Heritage has decided to mark the 1,400th anniversary of St Augustine's abbey near Canterbury, England, with the construction of an Abbey Museum which will also serve as a gatehouse. The design, produced by van Heyningen and Haward, fills a gap in the red brick wall surrounding the site. The rebuilt part of the wall has been designed as a permanent entity, while the museum building can be removed fairly easily if it outlives its usefulness. It has its own raft foundation, and has blockwork walls.

Knitting together Gothic and glass

Article Abstract:

Architectural firm Dempster Thrussell and Rae has been responsible for redesigning the Grade 1-listed Wool Exchange building in Bradford, England. This has mainly involved removing the north-facing Hustlergate facade, which was installed in 1896. It has been replaced with a glass wall, behind which a branch of Waterstone's bookshop is now located. Stonework repair has also been undertaken on the building as a whole, as has general restoration.
