China is slowly but irreversibly becoming a capitalist nation. Even Deng Xiaoping, the old guard of Chinese communism, has recognized the economic benefits of capitalist practices. The Politburo is expected to enact further capitalist measures at a meeting later this year.

The economic reforms started by Deng Xiaoping have created a growing middle class in China. The wealth has spread from the coastal zones to rural areas, where inhabitants no longer have to depend solely on farm income. The lives of two farm families are described.

Views are mixed on whether China's economic growth will continue to parallel the growth of the 'tiger economies' of Asia. Economic factors that favor growth are present in China, but weaknesses must be dealt with. China's political path is another important issue.
