Standing the conventional shopping centre on its head

Article Abstract:

Developer Chelsfield, along with Ian Ritchie Architects and executive architect Benoy, is planning a 170,000 square meter retail, restaurant, and cinema development in White City, West London. Chelsfield took over the scheme, transforming the orignal proposal and adding 150 million pounds worth of improvements to public transport. The streets will be covered and there will be parking for 4,500 underground. Nigel Hugill of Chelsfield believes that the development takes a consumerist approach to shopping centres.

Conservation reaches age of maturity

Article Abstract:

The conservation movement in the UK is showing signs of considerable change, and is now reaching maturity. This is particularly reflected in the fact that there is no longer consensus about what types of building should be protected. Some conservationists are not interested in protecting buildings from the recent past, while others are alarmed at this attitude. It is now more important than ever to have a clear sense of perspective when considering the conservation issue.

Are we eager for Egan?

Article Abstract:

Architects representing the profession discuss industry attitudes towards the Egan report. The Egan report does not pay sufficient attention to architecture and design, according to one architect. Architect Paul Hyett strongly supports the report because it offers a complete revision of industry procedure and constructional training. Professionals should gain practical experience on the job before being elevated to a position of authority, says Hyett.
