Catching the continental drift

Article Abstract:

As the United Kingdom (UK) increases its business links with Europe, the Manchester Business School (MBS), UK, has introduced two new ideas to help managers who will be working in the European section their companies. One scheme examines European bureaucratic organisation and the scope for new business which is proving very popular with students from Asia. Another scheme will involve managers working in the UK, Hungary and France in order to make a comparaison between industries within these countries.

Peter Wood branches out

Article Abstract:

Peter Wood is the founder of the Direct Line insurance company whose parent company is the Royal Bank of Scotland. Wood believes in keeping tight control on his business and investments. He has been approached by Richard Branson to participate in a joint venture although he plans to honour the contract agreed with the bank which has a further 18 months to run. The company is moving into household insurance and it has also launched mortgages and financial services.

Article Abstract:

The breakup of conglomerate ITT into separately quoted companies illustrates a growing trend in the management of industrial giants. Many so-called conglomerates are becoming more focused and specialised in order to benefit shareholders and to remain competitive in a changing market. An analysis of the changing face of diversified industrial corporations is presented.
