Two Thai telecom companies' plans may lead them into each other's turf

Thai companies United Communication Industry PCL and Thai Telephone and Telecommunications PCL have plans to expand their services in other areas of telecommunication. Mobile phone operator United Communication is seeking permission to operate fixed telephone lines. On the other hand, fixed phone operator Thai Telephone has plans to develop a mobile phone system that will expand its domestic operations.

Surakiart is surprise choice as Thai finance minister

Surakiart Sathirathai has been chosen as the new finance minister of Thailand. The appointment of the 37-year-old prominent law school dean and adviser to PM Banharn Silpa-archa surprised several analysts since his expertise in the financial sector is unproven. PM Banharn counters that Surakiart's youth and energy will more than make up for his lack of experience in banking dynamics.

New player in Thai cable-TV market has ambitious goals

Universal Cable TV Network PLC (UTV) is Thailand's newest cable TV provider. The company hopes to attract viewers dissatisfied with the service of other cable TV firms by offering only the best programs and providing reliable maintenance to its subscribers. UTV, which is in the process of signing up subscribers for the new service, hopes to have 100,000 subscribers by Jun. 1996.
