Mailstrom! The rush to postal profits

Article Abstract:

There have been considerable changes in the UK mail-order industry over recent years. Small, specialist catalogues are increasingly dominating the sector, replacing large catalogues from traditional mail-order houses. Furthermore, many high street retailers are now also establishing mail-order operations, and non-retailers such as museums are offering products by post too. Some general catalogue companies are seeking to respond to growing competition with developments such as 48-hour delivery services and the introduction of designer items.

Dividing the spoils: is a demerger an unbundling of business to improve shareholder value, or a way of un-bungling an overburdened management team?

Article Abstract:

Many companies are succumbing to demergers, including BAT Industries, a tobacco and financial services group with the demerger of its catalogue retailing business, Argos. Racal Electronics demerged its telecoms subsidiary and ICI completed its restructuring with the demerger of its biosciences business, producing Zeneca. Demergers are often undertaken to enhance shareholder value, although if a company's risk profile alters as a result, its cost of equity will rise.

How do they manage it?

Article Abstract:

There is very little agreement about the characteristics which make a company a leader in corporate excellence. However, it is clear that some companies indeed have the necessary qualities, as they regularly win awards for their management procedures. Some observers point to the importance of having a clear corporate goal, while others emphasise the importance of assessing and remaining committed to areas of particular strength.
