Smoke in your eyes: heavy pollution cuts into the quality of life

Article Abstract:

The smog hanging over Kuala Lumpur and many other parts of Malaysia is causing concern about health, the quality of rice grown in surrounding areas and poor visibility for aircraft. The problem is due to out of control forest fires in Sumatra, according to minister for science, technology and the environment, Law Hieng Ding. However others believe that the smog is home-made due to the country's economic boom accompanied by environmental degradation, including emissions from motor vehicles. There have been calls vehicles to be fitted with catalytic converters, but this would increase transport costs.

Forbidden love

Article Abstract:

The decision of Nur'aishah Bokhari, a Malay-Muslim woman, to convert to Christianity on her marriage to a Catholic has attracted considerable controversy in Malaysia. The country's constitution guarantees freedom of religion, but this is generally regarded as excluding Malays, who are all Muslim. This has become a very sensitive issue, and non-Muslim groups and opposition parties have therefore avoided commenting on it publicly. This affair could provoke anger among the majority-Muslim population at a time when economic problems are creating fears of social unrest.
