Out of the shadows

Article Abstract:

There are a few Chinese companies which are starting to sell their own branded goods in western countries. Most major brands in China are owned by foreign firms, but some Chinese brands are starting to emerge, such as Haier for domestic electrical goods, and Tsingtao beer. China is a major exporter, but Chinese goods tend to use other people's names. A national market is developing in China and companies may prefer to restrict themselves to the domestic market. Companies seeking to export see a number of obstacles such as the cost of advertising and sales and service networks. Appliance makers benefit from slower changes in the market, and the two most important international Chinese brands are for domestic appliances.
