Reach for the sky

Article Abstract:

Structural engineer and compulsive inventor Bryn Bird is a partner in the much-respected engineering company Whitby and Bird. His fascination with the inventions of masters such as Leonardo da Vinci has led him to spend more than 20 years trying to develop a machine that will make human-powered flight a reality. He is working on the fourth prototype of his ornithopter, a machine with flapping wings. Bird's latest design has a wing-span of 18.6 mt, with aluminium-mounted latex membranes that are controlled via hand and foot controls.

Out with the old, in with the nuovo at Bertorelli's

Article Abstract:

Harper Mackay has used dramatic colour and exotic finishes as part of its refurbishment of Bertorelli's restaurant in London, England. There are many innovative creative design ideas, with the reception desk and cloakroom being hidden behind carved oak beaver-tooth veneer cladding, for example, and the wall finish in the first-floor restaurant and ground-floor Cafe Italian being a woven lattice of veneered plywood strips. The old atrium has been moved to the back of the building.
