Auckland is in the dark: city seeks cause for two-week power outage

Article Abstract:

The two-week power outage in Auckland, New Zealand, has led to a government inquiry to explain why Auckland's major power lines began to founder in January 1998. Operations of several small companies suffered because of the power outage. As a result, Mercury Energy Ltd, the city's sole power supplier, is preparing for a torrent of lawsuits from dissatisfied businesspeople and inner-city residents. Critics charge that the company failed to maintain the city's cable, an accusation Mercury denies.
