Hard times

Article Abstract:

The pattern of wealth creation in the UK has changed during the 1990s. Less than 4 million of the 22 million employees now work in manufacturing, and manufacturing now contributes around 20% to gross domestic product compared to the 1989 figure of 24%. Fears about the demise of manufacturing in the UK first arose in the recession at the beginning of the 1980s. Industries, including software design, music and insurance, have proved very successful since then, but the question of whether the decrease in manufacturing is important continues to attract debate.

However, the company, which is set to have 45,000 employees by the end of 1996, regards itself as a global operator. It is moving towards being a virtual corporation, with top executives being able to oversee operations from wherever they are working. Article Abstract:

Frederick Winslow Taylor, a Quaker engineer from a Philadephia foundry, conceived scientific management earlier in the 20th century. In the late 20th century, the majority of standardized process in service industries are based on the principles of Taylor.
