Abbey homes in on N and P

Article Abstract:

Abbey National is seeking to acquire National and Provincial (N and P) which ranks ninth among UK building societies. The bid has been made to N and P's members, rather than the board, so is seen as a hostile bid. Abbey has strengths in southern England, and N and P is stronger in northern England, so the two companies complement each other. The price will depende on the quality of N and P's loans. N and P has 1.7 million members who could receive an average of 650 pounds sterling as a result of the bid.
