Abolition of two northern county councils proposed

Article Abstract:

The Local Government Commission for England has proposed the restructuring of county councils. On June 21 1993 it made proposals whereby the county councils of Humberside and North Yorkshire and district councils would be abolished. The formation of five new local authorities is suggested. These would comprise the East Riding of Yorkshire, the West Riding of Yorkshire, the North Riding of Yorkshire, and Kingston upon Hull and York cities. On June 14 1993 the Commission proposed that eight new unitary authorities replace the two-tier government structure in Somerset, Avon and Gloucestershire.

Re-imaging Belfast; creating a new image for Northern Ireland's main city

Article Abstract:

Parts of Belfast city centre have been redeveloped, after receiving government and private investment. This has been achieved partly because the IRA have not recently targetted the centre. A new shopping centre, Castle Court, has attracted major retailers, and pedestrianisation has improved the environment and safety for shoppers. Criticisms include the view that the change is superficial and a political solution should be found, and that the new buildings are out of harmony with the anti-terrorism measures necessary.

Exeter; traffic congestion and the survival of an historic city

Article Abstract:

Exeter is an historic city, with Roman, mediaeval and Georgian areas. It is a busy place, and has implemented a traffic and parking policy. More car parks have been built and all day parking discouraged. Mini-buses and park and ride have been introduced, and improvements to the rail network. Cars with more than one passenger have free parking and traffic calming measures brought in.
