Access control systems: new technology in security systems has a broad range of applications including the remote management of buildings

Article Abstract:

Access control systems permit and prevent entry and exit, but technologies can be expanded to control other facilities. Magnetic-stripe cards can be used for access control and card based systems are also used for vending machines, photocopying equipment and control of machinery or facilities including lighting, air-conditioning and heating. Other methods include hands free systems which involve wearing a tag which can be read, or biometric systems where identification is by an individual's hand, fingerprint, signature and eye.

Kingspan Insulation and the Kooltherm K range

Article Abstract:

The Kooltherm K-range of phenolic insulation sold by Kingspan Insulation is the most thermally efficient insulating material available. Its thermal conductivity value is 0.018 W/mK and it achieves required U-values with only a thin layer of insulant. The Kooltherm K-range, which includes floorboard, roofboard and cavity wallboard, also has very low smoke emission levels. Buildings which have used products from the Kooltherm K-range include Leeds Grammar School and the Boots Headquarters in Nottingham, UK.

Specifying for greener buildings

Article Abstract:

Every construction project should now take into consideration health and environmental issues. However there is a lack of clear design guidance and there are also different interpretations of scientific advances. Materials selection should involve tracing extraction, processing, manufacture, use, maintenance and disposal.
