Acer to overhaul chip unit

Article Abstract:

Acer Inc is planning to undertake a major financial restructuring effort as the company seeks to offset massive losses it incurred from the regional currency crisis. The company further eyes to raise some $303.1 million in a public offering to be used in upgrading its manufacturing technology and spread sheets. Acer is also engrossed in finding a new foreign partner for its dwindling computer chip manufacturing business. Acer's revenues dropped by NT$5 billion in 1997 due to inadequate demand for memory chips.

Utek offering may boost Taiwan's hopes: show of local confidence in chip recovery could have wide impact

Article Abstract:

Taiwanese semiconductor manufacturer Utek Semiconductor Corp. is banking on Taiwanese investors to fund its expansion plans, with its NT$6.3 bil domestic stock sale. Investment analysts believe that Utek's stock offering could succeed given its ties to Taiwan's No.2 semiconductor manufacturer United Microelectronics Corp. Utek is planning to sell some 300 mil shares at NT$21 each, with shareholders prioritized in the the rights offering.

TSMC appoints F.C. Tseng to succeed Chang as president

Article Abstract:

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (TSMC) has appointed F.C. Tseng as company pres succeeding Morris Chang. Mr. Chang is credited with helping build TSMC into one of the most competitive semicon companies in the world and expectations on Mr. Tseng's performance might be benchmarked with that of Mr. Chang's. Mr. Chang will remain as TSMC chairman but Mr. Tseng will oversee day-to-day operations.
