Today around 60% of all new building in Germany is single skin and insulated externally with Sto systems such as StoTherm Classic. StoTherm external insulation comprises a thermal insulation layer fixed to the wall, protected with cement-free reinforcing plaster, followed by cement-free finish render, providing a completely weatherproof but vapour-permeable finish. Building in a natural balance: the houses for the Findhorn Foundation embody its wish for conservation and sustainability

Article Abstract:

The Findhorn Foundation was founded more than 30 years ago with the philosophy that self discovery can be found in everyday situations as a community. It has over 100 full time members and 10,000 visitors a year. Village houses were designed to illustrate a balance of technology and natural systems and resources. Barrel Houses were built from 4m diameter whisky vats, featuring a circular living room, with an extension curving around part of the vat to house the entrance porch, bathroom and kitchen.
