Action faction

Article Abstract:

President Suharto of Indonesia floated the rupiah on Aug 14 1997 and gave a team of policymakers the task of pulling the country away from economic crisis. Many on this team believe that Indonesia should address domestic issues as well as the regional macroeconomic difficulties, but they do not yet have the agreement of the President. They believe that Suharto has been able to avoid domestic reforms due to the country's previous economic success, but should now face up to tasks including the dismantling of the foodstuffs trading monopoly held by National Logistics Agency Bulog.

Can't please them all

Article Abstract:

Indonesia's new deregulation package promises tariff cuts of about 5%, tied to Asean-wide ones, but domestic monopolies remain problematic in the new plan. The govt regulates wheat, sugar, and other commodities whose price has rose 10.5% year-on-year through Apr,supporting inflation of up to 15%, and reports of a poor rice crop could push them higher. The yen's strength has increased Indonesia's foreign debt 15% despite Q1 exports up 20% to $10.2 billion vs imports up 14% to $7.9 billion. Banking remains a troubled sector.

Default options

Article Abstract:

The Indonesian rupiah has dropped in value and this has led to problems for companies which have borrowed in US dollars. The extent of this debt has to be assessed if the problem is to be tackled. Default could occur and some payments have been missed. There is insufficient transparency in financial affairs in Indonesia which hampers the efforts of the central bank in tackling this problem. Recovery could take several years if banks and companies collapse.
