Myles Frechette, US ambassador in Bogota, Colombia, is reported to have been critical of the government of Colombian President Ernesto Samper. It is known that he believes that Samper accepted drug money for his election campaign in 1994 and that he has failed to take decisive action against drug dealers ever since. He has criticized a draft constitutional change permitting the extradition of drug traffickers for not being retroactive too. In fact, the Colombian government has devoted considerable resources to the fight against drugs, and Samper has shown great political courage.
