Action replay: the North Carolina Senate race

Article Abstract:

The resurgence of the Republican party could work in Helms' favor when he runs for reelection. But unlike his 1990 bid, the 1996 race will be influenced by a presidential election. Gantt's politics and agendas remain mostly unchanged since his defeat by Helms in 1990.

North Carolina's gubernatorial race between ex-governor and Democratic candidate Jim Hunt and the Republican lieutenant-governor James Gardner is a model for the presidential race. The candidates seem to parallel George Bush and Bill Clinton in terms of philosophy.

The man who can't say no: North Carolina

Article Abstract:

North Carolina is the only state in the US whose governor lacks the power to veto legislation. The Democrat-controlled state legislature has tabled a bill that would have granted veto power to Governor Jim Hunt, even though Hunt is a Democrat.
