Advanced Semiconductor to buy 2 Asian Motorola plants

Article Abstract:

Advanced Semiconductor Engineering Inc.(ASE) has announced its intention to purchase two computer-chip plants owned by Motorola Inc. The cash-rich Taiwanese firm, which holds the distinction of being the second-largest independent semiconductor assembler in the world, made the announcement on Feb 5, 1999. The purchase will give ASE two ultra-modern plants, one in Korea and the other in Taiwan, both of which have guaranteed built-in orders from Motorola, which also benefits from the deal as it allows the US company to meet its outsourcing targets.

Chartered Semiconductor in pact with LSI Logic

Article Abstract:

LSI Logic Corp. announced plans to invest more than $20 million in Singapore's Chartered Semiconductor Manufacturing Pte. Ltd. (Chartered Semiconductor). LSI Logic officals stated that the agreement is in line with the company's short-term production capacity expansion strategy. Under the terms of the agreement, Chartered Semiconductor will manufacture several LSI Logic products for use in advanced consumer electronics applications.

Acer moves into microchips: firm should stick with computers critics say

Acer Inc is actively seeking partners for its microchip venture but analysts say the company should stick to its core business of making computers. Acer is seeking partners that would enable the company to double its investment in a new company being formed to $79.1 million. Taiwan Semiconductor Technology is being financed by Acer with hopes that the semiconductor market will rebound and grow briskly by 2000.
