Aging with limited health resources

Article Abstract:

In May 1986, in Winnipeg, a two-day conference called 'Aging With Limited Health Resources' was sponsored by the Economic Council and attended by 100 individuals from a wide range of professional backgrounds. Many aspects concerning the health care system in Canada were discussed. Key among them was the desire to work for improved health care and set well defined goals to achieve this by the year 2000. Among other areas discussed were: the necessity of creating an information system of the highest quality; the need for more cost-benefit and cost effectiveness analyses; and the transition to a system that stresses individual health care responsibility and preventive measures. Canada's health care system receives much well-earned praise, but there are many areas in need of improvement.

Expectations and resources

Article Abstract:

Conservation of buildings began in the UK in 1932. By the early 1990's there were 8,000 UK conservation areas, listing is increasing by 400 annually. Buildings are divided into grades one and two, grade two more often being houses, public houses and farm barns. Owners of listed buildings are obliged to maintain and repair them using original materials, which is often beyond their means. Often local authorities have few resources to offer for restoration work to private individuals.

Insufficient rigour and resources

Article Abstract:

Carl Andre's new installation, entitled '12 Isohedra', consists of four sets of Scottish red sandstone bricks, each made of 24 blocks of variable size. The impression given by the work is lack of conviction, attention and execution, with the variations in block size detracting from the homogenous effect in the elements.
