USSR's collapse as a world power and the end of the Cold War signals the end of the US' containment policy justification for its oversized military budget. The containment of threats posed by other countries, such as China and Japan, will need only a modest amount of defense spending and military personnel. The Pentagon has come up, however, with minimal budget cuts citing a further need for the US to protect its position as a world power and to prevent the rise of new rivals.

Take time off on a tropical island retreat
Article Abstract:
Taiwan offers visitors seldom-glimpsed natural wonders such as Taroko Gorge, which is made of marble, and Kenting, which is a beach resort. The former is located in the central portion of the country while the latter lies south. These scenic spots, along with the national park which boasts of botanical gardens and pagodas, are places of peace and quiet because only few people usually visit them, preferring the more cosmopolitan atmosphere of Taipei.

A tropical retreat
Article Abstract:
Hainan Island in China was given special status in 1988 to pursue capitalistic ways and become a second Hong Kong, however it never realized its economic expectations. In 1998, Hainan Island has become China's Hawaii, however it is not as popular Hawaii for foreign travelers because of competition from other higher quality resort communities in the region.
