Look of the Irish

Article Abstract:

People in the UK have a distorted image of Ireland based on old prejudices. The integration of Ireland into the European Community (EC) has helped spur the development of the country. Ireland now has a sophisticated business community and a vibrant high technology sector. The value of Ireland's computer products exports are nearly equal in value to its exports of agricultural products, and high technology industries account for approximately one-third of all manufacturing jobs. Although Ireland still suffers from a brain drain due to its high emigration rate, many Irish emigres have returned to the country since the 1970s, bringing with them a fresh infusion of capital and skills. EC membership has had a profound effect on Irish business and life, moving Ireland away from reliance on its bilateral economic relationship with the UK.
