Alcatel stakes turnaround on more cuts

Article Abstract:

French-US telecommunications firm Alcatel-Lucent has announced further job cuts amounting to nearly 20% of its workforce, an additional 4,000 positions to the 12,500 job cuts it has already begun implementing. The move is expected to save almost $580 mil per year by 2009. Alcatel will also reduce its business divisions from 11 to seven, and speed up specific product phaseouts.

Alcatel-Lucent enters new area with laptop-security product

Article Abstract:

French telecommunications equipment firm Alcatel-Lucent has launched Nonstop Laptop Guardian, a card with its own power source that can be placed in a laptop. The card enables company headquarters to update virus protection and software, back up files, and also encrypt/destroy data should the laptop go missing.
