Aliant acquisition could help Alltel expand in U.S. and improve service

Article Abstract:

Little Rock, AR-based Alltel Corp. announced that its acquisition of Lincoln, NE-based local phone company Aliant Communications Inc. will extend its geographic area and enhance its ability to offer customers one-stop, one-bill service for telecommunications, including paging, cellular and local services. Alltel is the provider of Internet access, local, long distance and wireless services focused mainly in the US Southeast. Aliant has a cellular network serving Nebraska with 290,000 customers, and wire-line operations in Lincoln and 22 counties in the Southeast area of the state.

Ericsson to buy Torrent for $450 million

Article Abstract:

Telefon AB LM Ericsson has reached an agreement to purchase Torrent Networking Technologies Corp. Ericsson will acquire Torrent for $450 million in cash. The deal will bolster Ericsson's weak presence in the data networking industry. Ericsson stated that it will carry out additional Internet technology acquisitions in the following four months. The company's purchase of Torrent will make it more competitive with more powerful data networking firms.
