All the frills of party politics

Article Abstract:

Parliamentary elections are being held in Kazakhstan on Oct 10 1999, but there are difficulties in assessing how the parties differ. Most parties are under a year old, and they have all promised to revive agriculture and industry, support medium and small firms, and pay arrears of pensions and wages. Pensioners have been hit by a drop in the value of the pension in relation to the US dollar, used as an unofficial currency. The parties include the Republican People's Party, the Communist Party, and Otan, or Fatherland.

A whiff of something fishy

Article Abstract:

Inquiries into payments over land development and into allegations against former Irish Prime Minister Charles Haughey are set to have a negative impact on Ireland's ruling Fianna Fail party, which has only a small majority in parliament. There are also likely to be damaging repercussions from claims that former party treasurer Padraig Flynn, now Ireland's only commissioner at the headquarters of the European Union in Brussels, Belgium, was involved in illegal transactions in the 1980s.
