Alone in a man's world

Article Abstract:

Thailand's first and only female provincial governor has announced that her province is the first to have no child prostitutes. Charatsri Teepirach's accomplishment is remarkable in a country that has 100,000 children in the flesh trade by some estimates, especially as she had to work through police and other authorities accustomed to male leadership. In her rural province of Nakhon Nayok, 73% of children go to secondary school; she hopes to raise that to 100%, both for economic gains and to fight prostitution and disease.

Political handicap: few women choose to enter public life

Article Abstract:

Thailand's women are traditionally more prominent than men in business but few have translated that success into politics. The July 2, 1995 election saw only 242 women among the 2,370 candidates, and 24 among the 391 winning seats in the legislature. The few who are established politicians say those numbers must rise if women are to have equality. Discrimination runs through the laws on citizenship, divorce, and rape, and extends to such religious elements as the treatment of Buddhist nuns vs monks.

A venerable veranda

Article Abstract:

The Gymkhana Club in Chiang Mai, Thailand, which celebrates its centenary in 1998, is the oldest club in Thailand. It has strong overtones of British colonial life, even though Thailand has never been colonized by any country. It was founded by 13 Britons, and has only allowed Thais to be full members since the second world war. Some of the club's younger members believe that it should move away from its colonial associations and enter the modern age more fully.
