Alstom's profit surpasses expectations

Article Abstract:

Alstom SA posted profits that were higher-than-expected for its first complete year as an independent entity. Alstom also said that it was planning to sell off some noncore operations. The company's energy, rail, shipping, and contracting equipment saw greater demand on markets around the world. Alstom posted 303 million euros ($321.6 million) in group net profits for the year ending in April 1999.

France confirms plans to bail out Alstom
