Alusuisse-Viag rumors boost the Swiss company

Article Abstract:

Rumors of an alliance between Alusuisse Lonza Group AG and German-based Viag AG led to a 4.1% rise in the former's stock on November 20, 1998. However, Viag shares fell six deutschemarks in value on the same date. Alusuisse Lonza acknowledged only that alliance discussions are being conducted with Viag. Analysts were pessimistic about a full-fledged merger between the two companies. According to reports in the Swiss media however, a full merger was believed to be probable.

Zurich Cantonal Bank (ZCB) is planning to implement a major expansion in Switzerland's private banking industry. The bank is planning to increase its focus on its private clientele. ZCB posted an improvement of 21% in gross profits in the nine-month period ending in September 1999.

SGS' s restructuring puts Swiss company back on track

SGS Societe Generale de Surveillance Holding SA posted 316.5 million Swiss francs (199.4 million euros) in net profits for the 1999 year. The high figures came after the company's restructuring.
