Howitzers hit the road

Article Abstract:

Two new types of 15mm wheeled howitzers are expected to be available in the market in first couple of years in the 21st century. In 1999, Giat Industries S.A. has started to demonstrate a prototype of its Caesar 15mm/52-caliber truck-mounted howitzer in some Asian countries. The company also plans to complete a second example of the howitzer by early 2001. In Feb 2000, BAE Systems unveiled a computer graphics of its Light Weight Self-Propelled howitzer, which is based on the Mowag Piranha light armored vehicle.

Facing the air-attack challenge

Article Abstract:

Enhancements in heavy guns have made them effective elements of ground- based air-defense networks. Advances in gun electronic technology have resulted in guns with better sighting, fire-control, mounting and loading systems. Another contributing factor is the improvement in munition, such as the AHEAD programmable airbust round. These new munitions have a longer range, faster velocity and stronger explosives than their predecessors.
