Ambience, with attitude

Article Abstract:

Swire Properties uses an audio consultant called Skip Moy from California to select recorded music for the company's Hong Kong shopping mall, Pacific Place. There are 150,000 visitors using the mall every day and the aim is for them to stay longer. Classical music is deemed unsuitable as is music with vocals which attracts attention too much. Library music was initially used but considered too dull. Moy argues that his own morning choices are boring. The company paid 250,000 Hong Kong dollars for its musical makeover and the musical selection is reshuffled to ensure it is fresh.

Raving success

Article Abstract:

Planet Time Enterprises of Hong Kong has made $70 million dollars selling products connected with the rave culture to the youth market. Planet Time's directors are young, and claim to be ideally suited to understand what young people want, an asset not attributable to many business executives. Planet Time's products include neon-painted designs and electronic music. The company wants to open franchise stores in Hong Kong, Australia and Japan, and also wants to stay small. Both its products and its policies seem reminiscent of an earlier flower power age.
