Analyzing Hong Kong's votes

Article Abstract:

There is growing political awareness in Hong Kong, as reflected in the fact that many more people than expected turned out to vote in the first elections following Hong Kong's reunification with China. Around 1.5 million votes were cast, with the Democrats receiving 42%. This is an impressive achievement, given that the Democrats have had no clear political role since the handover of Hong Kong to China. The Democratic Alliance for Betterment of Hong Kong, the main rival of the Democrats, gained 25% of the vote and won seats in all five electoral districts.

Don't act like Tung is China

Article Abstract:

The 'one country, two systems' policy that China has adopted towards Hong Kong appears to be poorly understood by the US press who commonly believe that Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Chief Executive Tung Chee-hwa is serving China's interests in the territory. But an issue to be taken more seriously is that the misconception recurs in Hong Kong, with some demonstrators protesting outside the chief executive's office for the release of political prisoners in China. It is unhelpful for Hong Kong if its government is not trusted by Beijing.
