Anarchy in the UK brings brave new world

The top performing financial adviser on UK public takeovers in the first 6-months of 1998 is Morgan Stanley Dean Witter, which acted on 7 bids valued at 17,491 million pounds sterling. The largest of these deals was the 6.8 billion pounds sterling merger between Commercial Union and General Accident. Schroders advised on 17 bids, valued at 15,155 million pounds sterling. Lazard Brothers advised on 9 bids which were valued at 10,442 million pounds sterling.

It is estimated that a total of 45 private equity providers are currently seeking opportunities in Germany, where 74 buyouts worth $4.5 billion were carried out in 1998. The market is seeing quite strong growth, but the volume of money seeking a target indicates a shake-out. Germany's domestic private equity houses prefer to rely on their own origination skills, rejecting the auction processes operated by investment banks.
