Seeking the sounds of silence

Article Abstract:

Several countries, including the US, are collaborating with local companies to develop multistatic sonobuoys that can detect quiet submarines. Australia companies such as Sonacom and Acoustic Technologies are pursuing sonobouys for the Royal Australian Air Force and Navy. In Canada, several laboratories within its Defense Research and Development Branch are working on multistatic systems, such as the Wideband Active Sonar System. In the UK, Thomson Maroni Sonar and Ultra Electronics are competing for the Royal Air Force's Active Search Sonobuoy System requirement.

Turning the night into day

Article Abstract:

The capability of making aerial reconnaissance, target detection and precision strikes during the night is becoming a reality. The US, for example, already has the strike fighters and aircraft which can be used by pilots who use a combination of image-intensifying night-vision goggles and thermal-imaging forward-looking infrared imagery to target enemies even during the night. The advanced, podded day/night targeting systems, such as Lockheed Martin's LANTIRN, GEC-Marconi's TIALD, Thomson-CSF's PDL-CT or Rafael's Litening, together with precision-guided munitions, have made operating in the night possible. The next step will be the launch of internally carried night-vision systems, such as Northrop's Internal FLIR Targeting System.

Anti-ship missiles intent on littoral and land attack roles

Article Abstract:

Western anti-ship missile (ASM) makers are currently concentrating more on a wider capability, including land and littoral attack, instead of just the traditional blue-water anti-ship role. ASM suppliers are attempting to corner new markets, instances of which include the fitting of the Anglo-French-Italian Project Horizon frigate program; the Philippines future fighter aircraft; and corvette programs in Poland and South Africa. The projected maritime multi-role surface-to-surface guided weapon (SSGW) has to have the ability to point out a particular ship target in congested waters; find and strike a ship located near islands and find and destroy land targets.
