Article Abstract:

Microsoft has been found to have been involved in predatory behavior, using its monopoly power. There is a barrier to entry due to applications which allows Microsoft to charge more for its product. Companies seeking to enter the platform business have been seen as enemies by Microsoft. A superior court is unlikely to overturn the ruling against Microsoft. The company may find its power eroded through technological change, but it has seen its market value increase by 100% in the 18 months to Nov 1999.

Antitrust on trial

Article Abstract:

The case of Microsoft has given rise to questions on the role of antitrust law in modern economies, and how high-tech companies should be treated in terms of antitrust law. There is a debate on whether governments or markets should control monopoly power. Liberals also argue that high-tech companies are affected by rapid changes in the market so there is less need to seek to control their power. Windows has been seen to be vulnerable to technological change, and was seeking to control that change to protect its power.
