A new kind of Boeing

Article Abstract:

Boeing has seen an improvement in its results and stock price, and forecasts a rise in operating profit for 2000. The company is acquiring Hughes Electronic' satellite and space business. Boeing's revival has been apparent from late 1998. The company has tightened financial controls and has brought in a new management structure at Boeing Commercial. Boeing is expanding in aviation services and communications, and does not rule out aerospace mergers, though JVs or alliances may be seen as preferable.

Hubris at Airbus, Boeing rebuilds

Article Abstract:

Boeing is undergoing a recovery and is shedding jobs and introducing a computerised system for production management, as well as seeking to boost margins. Boeing's production engineering system is old-fashioned compared to that of Airbus, and its productivity is lower. Airbus faces problems due to arguments among the its partners, which have prevented Airbus from becoming a proper company. Lack of conversion to a company will hamper Airbus' ability to raise funds.

Fearful Boeing

Article Abstract:

Boeing has seen a drop in its stock price and the company could become a takeover target, according to chairman, Phil Condit. The company is still a major exporter, with a large stake in the airline market. A hostile bid appears likely but is possible while the stock price is low. The company suffered losses after price cutting, since productivity improvements had not been achieved. The company's defense and civil jet businesses complement each other, and much of its product range is healthy.
