Arroyo promises a new push for old plans

Article Abstract:

Philippines president Gloria Macapagal Arroyo hopes to stimulate her country's economy by pursuing a program of privatizations, increasing tax collections, and stimulating capital markets. The government also plans action against extremists and gangs that have incited fear in the business community and scared away tourists. Other actions demanded by the international community to enforce foreign exchange regulations will also be implemented.

Gloria Macapagal Arroyo disputes challenges from Joseph Estrada, stating that she is the elected president of the Philippines with full support from the armed forces. Arroyo plans to focus efforts on rebuilding the economy, reducing poverty, and tackling problems in the struggling power industry.
